The high school state wrestling meet gets underway on Friday.  Here's a look at some of the wrestlers to watch and storylines that follow.


Class 6A

VISION QUEST WATCH (going for undefeated season)

126lb  Sergio Arellano, Rio Grande (30-0)

138lb  Wes Rayburn, Piedra Vista (37-0)

145lb  Nick Rino, Piedra Vista (36-0)

195lb Joey Castillo, Las Cruces (42-0)


Class 5A

106lb bracket: #1 seed Devin Atencio, a freshman from Los Alamos with a 33-2 record, could meet up in the final against another freshman, Jonathan Gurule from Los Lunas with a 33-1 record.

113lb bracket: The #1 seed is Steven Sanchez from St. Pius X with a 28-2 record.  The #2 seed is defending state champ Frankie Baca from Del Norte who has a 33-1 record.  Guess who is the only wrestler to defeat him this year...Sanchez.

132lb bracket: James Ortega from Del Norte is trying to follow in his father's footsteps and win a state title.


152lb #2 seed Kyler Gonzales, Los Lunas (22-0)

220lb Christian Sanchez, Roswell (34-0)


Class 4A

There are a lot of first round byes because of a lack of qualifiers, but Javier Tapia is trying to cap off the perfect season.  He enters the 170 pound bracket with a 26-0 record.

Isaac Garcia, Manzano (This senior has lots of state experience)

Orion Gutierrez, Rio Rancho (Defending state champ)

Brandon Baeza, Las Cruces (football standout with a 13-2 wrestling record)

Lano Luna, Belen (28-1)

Gabriel Najar, Roswell (The Coyotes star football player enters with a 28-2 record)

Robbie Jaramillo, Valencia (31-1)
