ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The La Cueva Bears have a couple of players going to the next level. Infielder Austin Schlagel and outfielder Ryan Johnson are headed to powerhouse junior college Paradise Valley in Phoenix.

There is an advantage to going to JUCO route. Players can be drafted at any time unlike an NCAA Division I school, which forces players to play three seasons before to can be selected.

Both Schlagel and Johnson are thrilled with the opportunity.

"Paradise Valley, it's a great baseball school," Schlagel said. "One of my good friends, Ryan, is going with me. I'm very excited. It should be fun."

Johnson said he should get both playing time and an opportunity to develop there.

"The location was one of the bigger ones, but also because Paradise Valley is in a really competitive junior college conference," he said.

On the softball diamond Wednesday, the Sandia Matadors shut out the St. Pius Sartans 29-0. Sandia scored 12 runs in the first inning and never looked back.
