ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Manzano High School football team hopes to repeat history.

The Monarchs beat La Cueva in the first all-Albuquerque 6A state final last season. It was the first state football championship for Manzano.

The Monarchs will have to deal with changes if they want to return to the championship game.

They have a new head coach in Phil Martinez and the team has to replace all-state athlete Jordan Byrd.

Quarterback Dakota Powell is up for the challenge.

"I felt as a group, especially the senior core, we’re very focused. We got a lot of leaders. I feel like we've kept our junior class and sophomore class pretty focused on the task at hand and that's just doing our best every day. Last year doesn't define us. What we do this year, that's what defines this class and that's what we're aiming to do," Powell said.

Manzano opens the season against Las Cruces on August 25.
