PICTURES: Manzano wins first ever state football championship

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The Manzano High School Monarchs won their first state football championship Saturday when they defeated La Cueva 14-7, completing a Class 6A playoff run that saw them outscore their opponents by 63 total points.

The teams were scoreless at halftime, but Manzano was first to score when Jordan Bird raced into the endzone in the third quarter. After the Bears tied the affair at 7-7, a big run by Andrew Erickson proved to be the difference-maker.

The outcome also put the cherry on top of a perfect season for Manzano, which finished with a sterling 13-0 record. La Cueva's only two losses on the season were to the Monarchs. 

"It was a great matchup; they match up with us well," said Manzano head coach Chad Adcox after the game. "I'm proud we found a way to win. That is what this team has done all season -- find a way to win."
