ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- For the first since 2008, the Rio Rancho boys and girls basketball team will play in The Pit for the state tournament.

In an ironic twist, both teams are facing defending state champions.

The boys take on Atrisco Heritage on Tuesday at 8:15  p.m.

“It's exciting because it just says that both programs are doing really well,” said Wally Salata, Rio Rancho boys basketball head coach. “Coach Peterson has been here three years and how ironic that they get to play Hobbs again."

The girls will tip off first at 1:15 p.m.

“We're excited to be in this situation and you know, Wally has done an amazing job,” said Scott Peterson, Rio Rancho girls basketball head coach. “He's been a good mentor to me and, you know, I'm just excited that both teams are playing and competing at a high level this time of year."
