ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -  The Volcano Vista Hawks are involved in two-a-days this week. They will open the season against the La Cueva Bears. The Hawks feel to be the best, you have to beat the best.

The Hawks entered last year with high expectations, coming off a trip to the playoffs.

They got off to a great start, winning their five and their first six games.

But Volcano Vista struggled to finish off games down the stretch, losing their last four, two of those losses came by a combined three points.

“Everything was executed very well. It was just little mistakes that kind of just made us fall apart but we should fix those this year and come out strong," said wide receiver Blaine Grant.

With only a handful of starters back, the Hawks will have a lot of new faces stepping into key roles.

The players say everyone is pushing each other to step up and help the team win.

“Whenever we have competition, you know, someone gets down, someone does the wrong thing, you just got to pick them up. We all have the same goal, so as long as we're picking each other up and keeping everything better and it's easy to learn that way," said linebacker Connor Mills.
