ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Cop cars and yellow tape surrounded the O’Reilly Auto Parts store on Main Avenue as Durango Police continued to investigate a burglary early Wednesday morning that ended with the suspect dead.
"Initial reports that we have from our officers is that he was shooting at officers, the officer through the doorway, it’s a glass front doorway, and the officer returned fire striking and killing the subject,” said Commander Ray Shupe.
Commander Shupe said there was another person involved who might’ve possibly been the getaway driver.
One Durango resident said crime has been increasing over the years.
"There has been an uptick in violence in the last, I've been here for five years now, in the last two years there has been a pretty substantial uptick. First, it was silly graffiti and then it escalated in vehicles getting broken into,” said Evan Good.
Good said he lives a block away from where the incident occurred. He said he was impressed with how police responded.
"I’m glad to see that they closed off the road and have been very responsive with what appears to be a very serious incident and I think they are handling it appropriately for our small little town and I hope this isn't a trend but if it is, the police department is ready to handle it because it's definitely a scary thing,” he said.
Police said the subject who was shot and killed was in his 30s. No other information was provided.
