6,000 PNM customers to be billed by an estimate, not exact meter reading

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Several thousand New Mexicans have received automated phone messages from PNM, notifying them of a problem that could impact their power bill.
A PNM representative told KOB roughly 6,000 customers received the message.
Rio Rancho resident Roberto Martinez said that he received the unusual phone call Friday night. Martinez said the message said his power meter was not accessible so his next bill would be calculated via a PNM estimate.
“You can see the meter is in plain sight of the road and usually the meter guy usually parks right there in the front,” said Martinez.
The PNM representative said the calls weren’t issued because customer power meters were not accessible – rather, because PNM workers were tied up in several days of training.
“I was also wondering if my bill is going to be higher because of this estimate or is it going to be lower?” said Martinez. “If somebody is on a fixed income, $40 in the pocket is a lot of money… definitely could throw their budget off for the month. That was my concern in general.”
According to PNM, the affected customers will be billed by an estimate and not from an exact meter reading.
However, there is a quick fix for people who don’t want to be billed by an estimate. They can take the meter number themselves and submit it to PNM over the phone or online.
