NMSP charged Anthony Gabriel Valdez with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following the shooting in Guadalupita between Mora and Angel Fire. Valdez faces three other charges -- shooting at or from a motor vehicle, criminal damage to property and negligent use of a deadly weapon.

According to NMSP Public Information Officer Ray Wilson, Valdez's ex-girlfriend was inside a vehicle when he pointed his rifle at her. Valdez then fired at least one shot that hit the back of her vehicle when she drove off, Wilson said.

Police caught up with Valdez and found he still had his rifle with him, and Wilson said he admitted to opening fire. He was booked into the San Miguel County jail.
