ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- All schools in Aztec will shut down Friday following the terrifying moments inside Aztec High School Thursday morning. Classes had just started when gunshots started echoing through the hallways.
Students and teachers took cover in classrooms and hid closets. The school was placed on lockdown as students started texting and calling their parents to let them know what was happening.
Frantic parents and family members rushed there looking for any information after word of the shooting quickly spread through the small community. Police officers tried to keep the concerned crowd calm.
With police surrounding the school, parents were forced to wait until school buses finally dropped off students to be reunited with their families at McGee Park.
Sophomore Baily Ramirez described the moment a normal Thursday morning at school turned into a nightmare.
"There was a lot of banging going around, so we thought 'Oh, they're just working on the air conditioning,'" Ramirez said. "But the next thing we knew, our teachers start yelling for us to get in the closet right now and that it was gunshots that we heard."
Classes have been canceled Friday at all schools in Aztec. Grief counselors will be available to help students and staff deal with the tragedy from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the middle school.
The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office is asking any student who witnessed anything Thursday morning to contact them.
