RUIDOSO, N.M. – Bikers across the country made their way to the Ruidoso Convention Center for the 21st annual AspenCash Motorcycle Rally on Friday.

This year, the Golden Aspen and AspenCash rallies are under new ownership – a father and son duo who say bikes are a way of life for them.

“My dad has been riding for about 30 years, so he built me a little custom chopper and I led the (Golden Aspen) parade one year when I was about 6 years old,” Co-owner Blayne Maldonado said.

He said his dad, Humberto Maldonado, got permission from the Ruidoso Police Department for him to participate. He said when he had to step on the gas to reach the 45 mph speed limit, his adrenaline started pumping, but he was having a blast.

“Just being on a bike and having the wind and everything – it’s a different feeling. It’s a fun feeling. It’s a relaxing feeling, that’s what it is,” Maldonado said.

The 22-year-old said organizing the event was a monster, but his dad and team helped him out. This weekend, concerts, stunt shows and a tour run will take place.

Bikers will take a tour of Lincoln County, starting from the convention center and finishing at the Inn of the Mountain Gods Resort and Casino.

On Saturday, the bikers will parade through the middle of town starting at 10 am.

A 64-year-old biker from Lubbock, Texas said he was impressed with the rally Maldonado put together.

“I think it’s in his blood. If you get on a bike and you get to liking it the first time, you’ll never quit riding,” David Teer said. “And that’s what happened to him. He got on one, liked it, he’ll never quit. He’ll ride til he dies.”

Maldonado said this is the first time the AspenCash Rally is happening in May. The 49th Annual Golden Aspen Motorcycle Rally is scheduled for September 19 to 23.
