BLOOMFIELD, N.M.— The City of Bloomfield is looking into the possibility of contracting the Sa Juan County Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement.

In a letter posted on Facebook, Bloomfield’s mayor said, "last year, the police budget accounted for 42 percent of the general fund budget." She also noted that such spending on a tight budget "is not an option."

Since January, the number of police officers in Bloomfield has dropped from 18 to 13.

According to the mayor, there is not enough money to keep officers around.

The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office believes a partnership between it and Bloomfield is the right call.

It’s still not clear when the partnership would begin. However, the sheriff’s office believes it could start before the next fiscal year.
