RUIDOSO, N.M. — Can’t Stop Smokin', a popular restaurant in Ruidoso, was destroyed by a fire Sunday afternoon. The State Fire Marshal has taken over the investigation into what caused the fire.
For 12 years, the restaurant attracted customers from all over New Mexico and tourists from around the country. DJ Cedillos, a volunteer firefighter, was in town for business but ended up helping out. He said the turkey legs, brisket and customer service was great.
"The barbecue here was great. This was a great place actually. I made it a yearly trip to come out here just to eat barbecue. It was a great place," Cedillos said.
The owner of the restaurant, Pete Schiavone, watched it all go down.
"The fire kind of took over pretty fast and it was just kind of a little bit surreal watching it from across the street," he said. "I wasn't in there, but I was close enough to witness the whole thing."
The fire was more than what Ruidoso crews could handle on their own.
"We called in additional resources from Mescalero, Ruidoso Downs, Bonito Volunteer Fire Department and Glencoe," said Kerry Gladden, the public information officer for the Village of Ruidoso. "We had a total of about 50 personnel on scene."
The restaurant has about 14 employees. Many of them were inside with customers when the fire broke out. Schiavone only had one thing on his mind: their safety.
"I'm just grateful," he said. "I'm just very grateful that there were no injuries and everybody got out of there ok."
Schiavone said plans to rebuild are still up in the air and wants to help out his employees. He hopes to keep most of them working or help them find another job.
