Police say the 15-year-old had taken a subcompact semi-automatic .380 from a family member's home and put it in his backpack.

Law enforcement received a tip and went to the school to arrest the teen.

He was arrested without incident and is now in the juvenile youth correctional facility charged with the unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon on school premises.

Carlsbad Police are encouraging all gun owners to safely secure firearms in a safe or by using a gun lock. Free gun locks are available at the department.
