In a statement released Monday, County Manager Tony Boyd said "the cost of the current operation had become unsustainable and would have required the expenditure of funds and resources over the next five years that would have necessitated the layoffs of a significant number of all county employees and the reduction and, ultimately, loss of other services such as road maintenance and law enforcement."

The county will replace the detention center with a transport program, which will utilize the services of other facilities.

According to the statement, the Board of County Commissioners "has taken affirmative steps to secure employment for the members of its detention family at other detention facilities in the region.  Employees additionally will be compensated for their sick and vacation leave and will retain reemployment privileges as provided in the personnel policy."
