AZTEC, N.M. - Members of the Aztec community gathered with people across New Mexico Sunday for a final sendoff to Casey Jordan and Paco Hernandez.
Flames both big and small lit up the sky in a bonfire lit in remembrance of the two beloved students, friends and family members.
Students of Aztec High School will return to school without their classmates, but the families of the victims expressed belief that light still remained in the small community.
"To come back home and just see this support, it blows my mind," said a member of the Jordan family. "To see all this love…thank you guys so much. You guys are amazing and this is beautiful. I love you, Aztec."
Throughout the afternoon, residents had the opportunity to write notes to Jordan and Fernandez to place in the bonfire. Holding hands and hugging one another closely, the mood lifted with the flames as laughter and dancing made their way into this celebration of life and love.
While this town may have a long road to recovery, one thing was clear Sunday night: They will all light the way ahead together.
