ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- San Juan Regional Medical Center (SJRMC) discharged its 400th COVID-19 patient this week.
It was a major milestone for a hospital that has been hit hard with the virus.
"But it's also a testimony to the unbelievable team of caregivers here at San Juan Regional Medical Center," said the hospital's CEO, Jeff Bourgeois. "We have persevered through a lot of challenging times in tough patient care scenarios. To see the 400th patient leave our hospital and be able to return home is something to celebrate."
For months, San Juan County was the hotspot for COVID-19 in New Mexico. Hospitalizations at SJRMC make up 15% of the state's total hospitalizations. But Bourgeois believes the region has hit a turning point.
"Recently, we've seen a decline in a number of new cases diagnosed daily," he said. "Overall percent positive rate of test conducted throughout the county is continuing to decline."
Bourgeois said, as of Thursday, he has 20 COVID-positive patients hospitalized and seven awaiting test results.
