FLOYD, N.M.- A grass fire burned four homes near Portales Wednesday.

The fire broke out around 1 p.m.

Crews battled flames and 60 mile-per-hour wind gusts before getting the fire under control around 6 p.m.

"It was blowing so bad, it was so hot that it just burned everything off and the dust was really bad, the smoke was really bad," said Portales Fire Department Lt. Steven Cain.

Four homes were destroyed and two people were injured and taken to the hospital, including a Portales firefighter.

"The fire blew up on him. They couldn't back out fast enough and he sustained first and second-degree burns to his face," Lt. Cain said.

Evacuation shelters have been set up at First Baptist Church and the Portales Memorial Building, in Portales.

Fire officials estimate about 1,800 acres burned. It was 80 percent contained as of Thursday afternoon.

In addition to the Portales Fire Department, crews from Roosevelt County, Clovis, Texico, Melrose, Cannon Air Force Base and Chaves County helped fight the wind-whipped fire.

The cause of the fire has not been released.
