El Paso, New Mexico? Some like the sound of it

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - New Mexico is in the middle of a potentially nasty divorce. The state is getting thrown into a love triangle with Texas and El Paso.


An attorney in El Paso wrote a column that flirted with the idea that El Paso should leave Texas and join New Mexico.

“I think it would be better in New Mexico,” Fischer said. “I think it’s more culturally attuned to New Mexico and of course geographically closer to New Mexico.”

Fischer's column is titled, “Y'all, we need a divorce.”

He says some El Pasoans are tired of being neglected by their own state.

Fischer writes, “Our marriage to Texas has gotten old. New Mexico is younger and more attractive. We would not be ignored, especially because we would be their largest city.”

Fischer told KOB he hopes the article gets people talking, and New Mexicans paying closer attention to El Paso.

It got people talking on the KOB 4 Facebook page. 

John Jacob Schmidt wrote, “Born in El Paso and have always said it felt more like NM than Texas.”

But others would need more convincing.

“They have been in Texas forever and they need to stay in Texas. Don’t start changing history now.” Carolyn Johnson Metevier wrote.
