New Mexico State Police said an SUV crossed U.S. 285, between Roswell and Dexter, and failed to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic.

The SUV was struck by a minivan, killing the passenger, Maxine Peebles. Police said it did not appear Peebles was properly restrained.

The driver of the minivan and SUV were taken to the hospital. Both are expected to recover from their injuries.

NMPD did not disclose whether charges would be filed. The department said the crash is still under investigation.
