SANTA FE, N.M. - The Entrada de Don Diego de Vargas has been 'retired' from the Fiesta de Santa Fe.

The Entrada pageant reenacts the Spanish conquistadors reclaiming Santa Fe from the Native Americans more than 300 hundred years ago. Some people say it celebrates the bloodshed of Native Americans by the Spanish.

Los Caballeros De Vargas president Joe Mier says the Fiesta de Santa Fe has celebrated community and a spirit of inclusiveness and going forward, it will focus on the true meaning of the Fiesta: The unification of all cultures.

Santa Fe Mayor Alan Webber reacted to the decision moments after it was announced.

"Today’s announcement by the Caballeros de Vargas that they have retired the Entrada is a courageous and historic decision. It represents the successful culmination of a year-long process of respectful and prayerful discussions involving leaders from the Caballeros, Santa Fe Fiesta Council, All Pueblo Council of Governors and Pueblo leaders, Archdiocese of Santa Fe, and Mayor’s Office," Webber said.
