Police say Suarez and Avila got into a fight with two other young men, and at least one of them pulled a gun, firing and killing the 17-year-old. His name has not been released.

Espanola Police Chief Louis Carlos says Suarez and Avila were caught after speeding away from the Giant on Riverside Dr.

“This is police work at its finest,” Espanola Police Chief Louis Carlos said. “Once the officers stopped the vehicles, they knew something wasn't right. The officer, the statements being made, the suspects being nervous, it raised a flag on the officer so he detained them and then the call came through.”

Chief Carlos says they are still figuring out what led up to the fight, and who fired the deadly shot. So far, the other young man with the 17-year-old has not been charged with anything.

KOB’s Erica Zucco interviewed the suspects as they were booked. A transcript of that interview is below.
