FARMINGTON – Chevel Shepherd, 16, is representing Farmington on NBC's The Voice.

"Singing is amazing. It heals people. It heals me. I can put my emotions into it," Chevel said.

Chevel's journey to the national stage began in February 2017 when she first tried out for the show.

"I like how it is different from American Idol and America's Got Talent. Like America's Got Talent has a whole bunch of different talents. But on The Voice, they don't see, they just listen to your voice. And if they want you, they push their buttons," Chevel said.

Chevel's first on-air performance made a huge impression.

"Whenever my face was on TV and we watched my whole blind audition, everyone was freaking out crying, screaming. There was so many emotions in the room," Chevel said.

She did so well, three of the four judges turned their chairs. She decided to team up with last season's winning judge, Kelly Clarkson.

"What Kelly Clarkson told me was that I was in my head a lot. And she's been in my shoes, so what she told me kind of motivated to pick her because I feel like she could do a lot for me in the future," Chevel said.

With her family by her side, Chevel believes she is ready for the next part of the competition.

“You just have to work hard and just keep trying. No matter what happens. No matter what the outcome is,” Chevel said.
