COLFAX COUNTY, N.M. - The Ute Park Fire, in northern New Mexico, has burned about 16,300 acres. That's down from an earlier estimate of 16,500. Fire crews say they got the latest number after doing more accurate mapping of the area.
The community of Ute Park is now under advisory evacuation orders, as the fire moves away from the area.
The village of Cimarron remains under under mandatory evacuation orders, with 296 structures still threatned.
Officials with New Mexico State Forestry say Philmont Scout Ranch staff has also evacuated. KOB has been told that there were no scouts at the camp. However, fourteen outbuildings on the ranch were destroyed.
Jim Smith says the fire started 100 freet away from his home.
"We're always afraid of it when it's as dry as it is and the wind. It's always windy in the canyon, so there was some anxiety on my part because I didn't know whether the wind was going up hill or downb but I got home as fast as I could," he said.
There are multiple evacuation centers in the area. The American Red Cross is running two of them.
"We immediately jumped into action, had the food, the kitchen was up and going. The mayor was here, immediately just reaching out to all of our partners figuring out what our capacity would be," said disaster program specialist Lucas Brooks.
State Forestry officials said the fire jumped Highway 64, causing its closure between Cimarron and Eagle Nest. U.S. 64 from Interstate 25 to Colfax, Highway 21 from Springer to Cimarron, and State Route 58 from Interstate 25 to Cimarron are also closed.
There are numerous agencies fighting the fire from the air and the ground. A cause has not been determined.
