AZTEC, N.M. - A former Aztech High School teacher has been arrested for having sexual contact with students.

New Mexico State Police began investigating James Dee Coulter, 31, in June after the Public Education Department did its own investigation into whether Coulter had an illegal sexual relationship with at least one female high school student.

NMSP said a former Aztec High School student told officers that she had sex with Coulter on at least two occasions in 2015. The then 17-year-old girl told police that Coulter didn't want her to talk about their relationship because it could potentially ruin his life, so she never reported it.

Police say after they arrested Coulter Friday morning, he admitted to several more unlawful sexual relationships with other female high school students.

NMSP said it will investigate the additional crimes and try to identify the victims.

Coulter faces four counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor.

He is no longer employed as a teacher at the Aztec High School and the PED is starting the process of revoking his teaching license.
