SANTA ROSA, N.M. – A 35-year-old employee at the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Office has been arrested after State Police investigators say she stole $2,715 in submitted bond money rather than passing it along to court.

The missing bond money had originally led to "a warrant being issued for one of the individuals who had originally paid their bond," State Police say. The bond moneys were received from two separate victims by Sarah Moncayo, a secretary at the GCSO who police say voided the receipts before taking the money for herself.

Moncayo was arrested Wednesday after admitting to stealing the bond money, and now faces charges of embezzlement, tampering with evidence and fraud – all fourth-degree felonies.

The warrant for the victim who originally paid their bond has since been cleared. Police say the identities of those two victims will not be released.
