ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Police will soon be allowed to double fines for traffic violators on a stretch of New Mexico road known as the highway of death.

The State Transportation Department has designated the section of Highway 285 stretching from the Town of Loving to the Texas border as a safety corridor.

Last month, KOB 4 Investigates took a look at that dangerous highway where, according to the Eddy County Sheriff's Office, nine people died last year on that particular stretch.

Along with a higher number of traffic tickets, the safety corridor designation is expected to lead to improved road signage and provide funding for police to work overtime.
