Main Elevators at Carlsbad Caverns still not working

CARLSBAD, N.M. - The two main elevators at Carlsbad Caverns are still not working, despite a June deadline to have them fixed.

The delay could mean more waiting for people planning to visit the park ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.

"So Fourth of July weekend is usually our biggest weekend of the year,” said Carlsbad Caverns Public Information Officer Michael Larson. “There's still some work that's being done on what we call the primary elevators."

The park's two main elevators, which each hold 16 people, are still under renovation. And it’s still not clear when they will be ready to go.

For now, Carlsbad Caverns is relying on two secondary elevators that can each carry eight people. That can lead to long wait times.

"Right now, they're upwards of anywhere from five minutes to 30 minutes. During our busier times, it can be over an hour, wait time," Larson said.

The alternative is an hour-long hike to the caverns.
