SANTA FE, N.M. – The family of a Pennsylvania man accused of breaking into a Santa Fe author's house to find treasure last week is now asking the public for $25,000, representing the latest bizarre twist in the saga of Forrest Fenn's infamous hidden riches.

Since Wednesday, the GoFundMe page has raised $570 of its $25,000 goal. Robert Miller's sister wrote on the page that they need the money to pay his attorney's fees, as well as to help his family return home to Pennsylvania.

Lapel camera video from Santa Fe Police caught Miller's arrest outside Fenn's home on Friday. According to court documents, he told police he flew to Santa Fe and broke into the home believing the treasure was inside.

In 2010 Fenn said he hid a treasure chest full of gold and jewels said to be worth more than $2 million somewhere in the Rocky Mountains north of Santa Fe, even writing a poem allegedly containing clues to find it.

No treasure has since been found.

Miller told police he and his wife only have $130 in the bank and that he wanted to find the treasure to change his family's financial future.

"I thought the poem directed me into here," he can be heard telling police in lapel camera footage.

In an email on Tuesday, Fenn told KOB Miller broke into a casita on the property where his grandson lives, helped himself to a beer, vandalized some property and was trying to walk away with an antique wooden chest when he was confronted by the author and his daughter.

Inside that chest were some towels.

Miller's family says he has another court date in three weeks, so he will be staying in Santa Fe for now. He is being charged with burglary, breaking and entering, and criminal damage to property.
