ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Meow Wolf’s story is heading to theaters.
On Nov. 29, for one night only, Meow Wolf: Origin Story will premiere on more than 600 screens in more than 150 cities.
The documentary tells the story of Meow Wolf, from a small art collective with humble roots in Santa Fe 10 years ago, to an internationally known art attraction in Santa Fe, visited by more than a million people since it opened two years ago.
Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin bought an abandoned bowling alley that would become Meow Wolf's "House of Eternal Return."
"It's one thing to experience the house, but it's a whole other thing to know who built it and why and how and all the success and failure that led up to this," said Jilann Spitzmiller, one of the film’s directors.
Spitzmiller and her co-director, Morgan Capps, said their film, executive produced by Martin, is more than just a documentary about Meow Wolf's origin.
"I hope what's more important is that fight that creative compulsion to create and to not give up on that even when you should," said Capps.
Meow Wolf will donate a portion of ticket sales to the company's annual DIY fund, which supports up-and-coming art and music spaces across the country.
"I think Meow Wolf is interested in starting a movement and catalyzing people's creativity everywhere," said Capps.
