Mountain lion killed in Belen

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- A mountain lion was killed in Belen Tuesday night.

Residents said a man was out looking for nuisance raccoons when he came across the mountain lion. They said he shot it while it was in a tree.

At least one man suspects the mountain lion could’ve been hunting his livestock.

"Now it looks like I've lost something,” said AJ Solis, who is missing a goat. "That mountain lion might've gotten that little girl's brother there, I believe. They don't just disappear."

Neighbors said it’s extremely rare to see mountain lions so close to town.

It's legal to shoot a mountain lion in New Mexico without a license but only if that mountain lion killed livestock or presented a danger to human life.

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish said the shooting was justified.
