ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Multiple injuries have been reported at the Guru Ram Das Puri retreat center just west of Española due to a large tent that flipped over because of a dust devil.
The center is hosting the Summer Solstice Sadhana Celebration, a 9-day spiritual gathering. This is the 50th year for the summer solstice retreat hosted by the Sikh community.
The tent was occupied by over 300 people, according to Rio Arriba County Sheriff's deputies. It was the entrance to the celebration and also serves as the dining area.
15 people were injured and transported to the hospital.
"The wind was just so hard and hit so fast that all the webbing and ropes that are used to secure the tent – those just broke loose," said Randy Sanches, spokesperson for the Rio Arriba County Sheriff's Office.
Multiple agencies have responded, including units from Española Fire Rescue, Rio Arriba County, and Santa Fe County Fire Department. They were on the scene along with multiple ambulances from Presbyterian hospital and a helicopter.
According to Sanches, one woman was even flown to Albuquerque with a head injury.
He said that none of the injuries were critical, and most of the injuries came from flying debris.
Organizers did not want KOB 4 cameras on the property.
