Crystal Boarding School, Ch’ooshgai Community School, and Naschitti Elementary all were closed.

Permanent and temporary Navajo Nation employees, who work in the impacted areas, also had been granted two hours of administrative leave due to the outage. The leave is for the worksites within the affected areas only.

Navajo Nation officials say a regional outage affected communities in Arizona and New Mexico. Here’s a look at the communities without power: Window Rock, A.Z., Fort Defiance, A.Z., Ganado, A.Z., Burnside, A.Z., Steamboat, A.Z., Klagetoh, A.Z., Wide Ruins, A.Z., Kinlichee, A.Z., Nazlini, A.Z., Tohatchi, N.M., Naschitti, N.M., Sheepsprings N.M.,  and Navajo, N.M.

Officials say it all started around 4:30 pm. Thursday when the main transmission line feeding Navajo Tribal Utility Authority failed and cut power to more than 10,000 customers on the Navajo Nation.  Arizona customers received power around 7 p.m. Thursday and remaining customers had power restored Friday morning.

PNM says crews worked through the night to reenergize the main transmission line and the outage was likely due to the wind.
