ROSWELL, N.M.— New Mexico’s Teacher of the Year is a mother of four who coaches volleyball when she’s not in the classroom.

"I felt empowered, I felt overwhelmed and totally awestruck that it was me they picked,” said Jessica Sanders, who teaches science to sixth and seventh graders at Berrendo Middle School.

One of her former students said she is looking at a future in science because of Mrs. Sanders.

“She's explained everything in a way that everybody can understand, and everybody can interpret it in different ways, where we all do really well in that class," said Avie.

Mrs. Sanders’ co-workers said she exuberates excellence in every way she can.

"She lends very well to wanting to service every kid in every capacity, give them the best opportunities possible,” said Sherry Armbruster, who is the gifted and special education specialist at the school.
