ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- The New Mexico attorney general's office is working to crack down on charity fraud and scams.

Cholla Khoury, the director of consumer and environmental protection at the attorney general’s office, said they are currently conducting a sweep to make sure every charity is following all the rules.

“We're putting eyes on every single one of the charities that is registered with our office to make sure they are up to date with their registration,” she said.

Before a person donates, they can search any charity on the attorney general's website.

“It provides a resource and a level of transparency that's really important because these donations are essentially public money. They are being given out of the goodness of peoples hearts," Khoury said.

The attorney general's office has already found a number of charities in violation.

“If you are interesting in donating to a charity, the cause sounds good to you, you want to look into to it make sure you do your homework first,” said Khoury.
