TAOS, N.M. - A New Mexico couple met with some of the suspects who were arrested after authorities raided their Taos County compound.

Latifa Weinman and her husband Michael run the only mosque in Taos. They were permitted to go inside the county jail where the inmates are being housed.

“They are our Muslim brothers and sisters. I have no opinion about what they have done or what they are accused of doing. I am supporting them simply because they are my Muslim brothers and sisters,” Latifa said. “I went to the prison yesterday and I spoke with the women to see what they needed. They wanted Korans. It's like somebody asking for the Bible to help them in their time of need, so of course, we brought them Korans.

Latifa and Michael are familiar with at least one of the suspects. They said Lucas Morten worshipped at their mosque a few times in the fall of 2017.

“In the current climate, with so much Islamophobia and so much racism, I just hope these people can get a fair trial,” Latifa said.

She said her husband met at least of one the men in jail, who had concerns about the food.

“They were hoping for more appropriate food, but they are doing alright with the food because they can eat vegetarian food. They would rather have what is called halal food,” said Latifa.

Halal food is food that has been cleansed according to Islamic Law.
