SANTA FE, N.M. - Big changes are in store for Fiesta de Santa Fe, which officially begins at noon Friday on the plaza.
"This is the biggest event of the year,” said Andrea Tate. “It's the greatest event of the year and we're hoping all of the local people and everyone from Santa Fe and visiting will come down and join us in the festivities."
Tate and her daughter, Andrea Caldera, along with their family, have been running their El Molero Fajitas booth at the Fiesta for nearly 30 years.
"I've grown up downtown. It's been my second home. So it's been incredible to see what it is now," said Andrea Caldera.
This year, La Entrada, which reenacts the Spanish conquistadors reclaiming the city from the Indians following the Pueblo Revolt, was canceled after it drew increasing criticism over the years.
"It was tough. It's hard for us. It was something that we've done for hundreds of years,” said Fiesta Council member Gary Delgado, who is also on the Caballeros de Vargas board.
He says La Entrada is being replaced with a prayer for unity.
"It's a celebration of community and faith. And it's a lot of prayer, Native prayers, local Franciscan prayers, interfaith prayers. We're just all coming together to keep unity and peace. That's our goal right now."
