ROSWELL, N.M. - People in southeast New Mexico are on the lookout for pecan poachers.
Vivian Oaxaca said she was a victim of a pecan theft Saturday Morning.
"This guy came up on a bicycle with a golf club and he said, ‘What the hell are you doing here?' And, I said, ‘I live here, what are you doing here?’ and he said, ‘I come here to pick pecans.’ I said, ‘Well, they're my pecans and you're stealing them.’"
Roswell police said Oaxaca is not the only victim.
In recent weeks, they have seen pecan trees damaged at several city parks.
“Branches being pulled, struck off of the tree. We see them, find them on the ground, apparently by people who are trying to get the pecans that are still up in the tree,” said Todd Wildermuth, public information officer for the City of Roswell.
If a tree is damaged, consequences can be serious.
"They can be charged with criminal damage or other types of charges, so it's not a minor thing," Wildermuth said.
