ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – U.S. Navy officials said Friday's aircraft crash about 60 miles north of Holloman Base killed one of its pilots, in what officials are calling a "mishap" that is under investigation.

Christopher Carey Short, from New York, died when the aircraft went down "on a mission over the Red Rio Bombing Range," a separate U.S. Air Force facility in southern New Mexico. Col. Houston Cantwell said in a release he was thankful to have known Short.

"There's no way to describe the shock of this loss and the sadness we feel for his family," Cantwell is quoted as saying in the release. "He did pioneering work in aviation that will help shape American air power for years to come."

The crash occurred just before noon Friday. A second pilot was released from the hospital Friday after suffering only minor injuries.
