PNM warns about phone scammers

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - PNM Electric is sounding the alarm about a new phone scam that’s targeting businesses and residential properties.

"Scammers are getting more and more savvy every single day,” said Shannon Jackson a spokesperson for PNM Electric. “What we've seen is scammers can call and leave messages and a fake phone number to call them back at it. And when customers do call them back they even hear a duplicate copy of our on hold messages."

The music and pre-recorded message on the phone line might be identical, but there are still ways of determining a scammer is on the other line.

The biggest sign that a scammer is calling is if they ask for a pre-paid gift card.

PNM Electric said if someone is threatening to shut off the power, customers should check their bill. Officials say there will be verified notifications on the bill.

The company does make phone calls to customers about past-due payments, but scammers pretending to be PNM won’t know who they’re calling. PNM said it will have customer information on-hand.

People who believe they have been a target of the scam can call their local police department.
