ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- A man was shot and killed by an APD police officer in southeast Albuquerque near Louisiana and Gibson Sunday afternoon.
APD spokesperson Simon Drobik said officers originally responded to the apartment complex around 2:20 p.m. after receiving calls from residents about multiple shots being fired in the complex.
“He walked right by me,” said Oscar Abeau, who was just steps away when we spotted a man with a gun.
“He had the gun hanging down like he was trying to hide it – then I heard ‘ you over there, put your weapon down on the ground and lay down,” said Abeau, adding that shortly afterward police opened fire.
“There were like 12 shots – that’s the only thing I think they maybe went too far,” said Abeau.
APD confirmed the male suspect died on the scene after at least one officer opened fire. No officers were injured during the incident.
APD could not immediately identify how many rounds were fired by its officer.
Drobik told KOB 4 its crime scene investigators on scene “will account for every round and look at the totality of the investigation.”
At least one APD officer has been placed on routine paid administrative leave.
This marks the sixth police shooting for APD so far this year.
