ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- A 7-year-old girl from Guatemala died of dehydration and shock after she was taken into Border Patrol custody in New Mexico, according to the Washington Post.
Citing Customs and Border Patrol records, the report says the girl and her father were taken into custody Dec. 6 south of Lordsburg.
They were apparently with a group of more than 150 people seeking asylum.
About eight hours after being taken into custody, the Washington Post reports the girl started having seizures. The report goes on to say that the girl was flown to a hospital in El Paso, where she died.
A statement from the Customs and Border Patrol, provided to the Washington Post, said the girl reportedly had "not eaten or consumed water for several days."
The statement goes on to say that "Border Patrol agents took every possible step to save the child's life under the most trying of circumstances."
