Ronald McDonald Family Room to open at Santa Fe hospital

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.— Ronald McDonald is spreading his rather large footprint into Northern New Mexico.

A new Ronald McDonald Family Room at Christus St. Vincent Medical Center in Santa Fe will open in October.

“Even though it's a room that's serious and there's a lot of anguish and heartache that people are experiencing, I hope the people will bring a smile to their face during that time,” said Robb Rael, an artist who spent more than a month painting a mural in the room.

The room is the first of its kind in northern New Mexico. It’s slated to serve more than 300,000 people in a five-county area.

“So those rooms are really there to just give that respite to those families. When they're in the rooms with their children day in and day out, just a moment to get away from the beeping of the machines,” said Jessica Bridwell, Ronald McDonald House executive director.

People can’t sleep in the room overnight, but they can prepare a meal in the full kitchenette, grab a snack from the refrigerator and take some time to reflect in a quiet space.
