Program aims to keep Roswell 'clean and safe'

ROSWELL, N.M. -- From April 2 through Oct. 31, residents will be able to save money when dumping debris at the landfill. The City of Roswell’s "Clean and Safe" program is aiming at clearing up dilapidated buildings by offering property owners a good deal.
First, property owners need to contact the city’s Code Enforcement Office at 421 N. Richardson Ave. An inspector will then have to ensure there is no asbestos in the building, said Mike Mathews, director of special services.
Once the inspection is complete and the $5 permit fee is paid, citizens can head over to the landfill located at 3006 W. Brasher Road, where tipping fees will be waived. The landfill is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Mathews said those waived fees can save property owners money.
"It'll be in the thousands, anywhere from $3,000 to $8,000 probably," Mathews said, "depending on the size of the structure and how much material is also being hauled in."
Mathews added that clean material such as metal will make a big difference in the savings once separated from the regular material. With the clearing of abandoned buildings, Mathews said crime tends to slow down.
Residents like Hope Garcia-Gutierrez agree. She said two dilapidated structures were removed near her home. She said criminals were left with no place to hide. Garcia-Gutierrez said many dangerous things like drugs and needles can be found inside abandoned homes, where children can go inside and play.
"It would be like helping the community, get rid of things that are not supposed to be around, and nobody else can get in there and use things that they're not supposed to," she said.
