FARMINGTON, N.M.- At first glance, the Salvation Army's handout of food and toys in Farmington this year looked much like last year's. However, officials said it was much different.

"We've actually seen our numbers triple,” said Captain Darla Malone, who works with the Salvation Army.

This year, the Salvation Army is working to help about 400 families in need with food and toys.

So why the increase?

"Lack of work. A lot of people have become unemployed and so they are just coming up on some hard times,” Malone said.

Despite the massive rise of families seeking assistance in the area this holiday season, officials with the Salvation Army are seeing the community is helping them to meet the need.

"Without them, I don't think we'll get any of this done. Especially if it has tripled from last year," Sharon Reimers.

Officials with the Salvation Army are hopeful the numbers will drop as they head into the new year.

"You know, you never want to see your numbers go down, but in this case, I’d love to see my numbers go down. You know? Because that would mean people are working,” Malone said.
