SAN ANTONIO, N.M. - Rushing water tore through a small New Mexico community overnight, leaving behind a path of destruction.

Flood waters damaged about 20 homes in San Antonio.

One woman says the water in her home was waist deep.

"Waster was gushing in through my back door. I heard a boom and water was gushing in through my garage," said Carree Gonzales.

A spokesman for the Socorro Electric Cooperative said water rushed through an arroyo, uprooting poles and anchors along a transmission line and knocking out power to about 1,560 customers in and around Magdalena.

Rep. Gail Armstrong (R - Magdalena) and Sen. Howie Morales (D - Silver City) are calling on Socorro County officials to request an emergency declaration from Governor Susana Martinez.

“We are working with local and state officials to bring assistance to this community as quickly as possible, and are encouraging the county to request an emergency declaration from Governor Martinez,” said the legislators. "We are also encouraged by how quickly local officials have been working to gather the resources needed for relief during this difficult time."
