ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Lilly Tsosie’s daughters said their mother was always putting others first.

"If anything, her grandkids came first before anybody—including us. She was a good mom, she was a coach, she coached us in softball, soccer, she did it all on her own, and we are very proud of her,” said Lilly's daughter, Lauren Tsosie.

Tsosie was a caregiver at San Juan Regional Medical Center. She celebrated her 30th anniversary in May—a milestone was honored with a plaque outside the hospital.

"They would always request her,” said Lilly's daughters. “They would say, 'I want Lilly Tsosie to draw my blood,' even though it probably hurt the other person's feelings. She wanted to make sure she stuck them right. She didn't want to hurt them. She didn't like it when patients would come in already bruised from somebody trying to reach their veins."

The Tsosies said Lilly was eager to keep working during the pandemic and that she took every precaution possible.

Even with the precautions, Lilly began experiencing headaches. She later tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted into the hospital on May 22.

"She’s still fighting and it was like that every phone call. She’s still fighting, let’s not give up hope. Towards the end, it was like okay she’s still fighting but I think she’s done. I think she’s done," said Lacey Tsosie.

Tsosie passed away on June 17. at the Lovelace Hospital in Albuquerque. She was brought back to San Juan Regional Medical Center later that week where staff lined up in her honor.

"This is the hardest thing for any of us to go through so we just ask for everyone to wear their mask and keep washing their hands. This COVID is not a joke or something that is just gonna go away," the daughters added.

The Tsosie family said they will continue spreading awareness about COVID-19.
