San Juan County to get drug incinerator

FARMINGTON, N.M. - In an effort to rid the county of confiscated drugs, the San Juan County Sheriff's Office will be getting an incinerator next year.

The purchase, which comes in just short of $12,000, is the result of law enforcement funding from the town of Kirtland.

"We need to have a safe way of destroying drugs in San Juan County," San Juan County Undersheriff Shane Ferrari said.

In the past, the sheriff's office has used burn barrels and a bomb squad to destroy confiscated drugs. The office has also driven the drugs to other law enforcement departments, such as the Albuquerque Police Department, for destruction.

When these methods proved inefficient or no longer available, the office made the move to be self-reliant. The most common drugs they collect? Marijuana and prescription medication.

"We constantly found ourselves trying to find others to take care of our problem or using what we had," Ferrari said. "We don't have to rely on anybody else. We can take care of our own."
