CARLSBAD, N.M.—New Mexico State Police are investigating a deadly crash that claimed the life of a 14-year-old girl from Carlsbad.
14-year-old Sierra Corrales was killed in the rollover Tuesday on Howard Road near Gonzales Road just southeast of Carlsbad.
The preliminary investigation shows another 14-year-old girl was driving an SUV at a high rate of speed and for some reason left the road and then rolled.
Corrales, who was one of seven passengers in the vehicle, was ejected and pronounced dead at the hospital.
Three other passengers suffered non-life threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital to be evaluated.
Police say it appears seatbelts were not in use at the time of the crash. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
According to police, the vehicle belongs to the driver’s mother and charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
New Mexico State Police’s Crash Reconstruction Unit has been called in to assist in the investigation.
