OTERO COUNTY, N.M. - The fire burning near the town of Mescalero in southern New Mexico is now 90-percent contained.

The Soldier Canyon Fire sparked last Thursday on the Mescalero Apache Reservation and has burned approximately 1,300 acres.

Fire officials say containment is nearly complete as helicopters continue to drop water on the smoldering terrain and firefighters on the ground work to secure the fire's edge.

The Mescalero Apache Tribe has issued a closure order for the fire area in order to protect the public.

The fire was human-caused, but remains under investigation.
